Darrell - December 2017


We all know leading a healthy and active lifestyle and exercising can help us stave off obesity and chronic disease and help us live more freely — in so many ways.

But for some, fitness takes on a whole new meaning when they are faced with a choice: either get healthy, or suffer.

This month's Featured Fit Dad, Darrell, knows this all too well, as you will see as you read his interview. His perspective is an important one after overcoming the health issues he once faced, and now as a fit dad, he's focused on not only his own health and fitness, but also on the legacy he's leaving for his two children (ages 2 years and 2 weeks), and his children's children.

Another cool fact about Darrell: He's the Director of Player Development for the University of Oregon baseball team.

Here is Darrell's story:

When did you first get into fitness?

Back in 2011, I was 235 pounds dealing with a seizure disorder that had taken over my life. I decided to get in better shape and dedicate my life to fitness. I am now seizure free and a completely new and healthier person. I can honestly say that fitness gave me my life back.

What activities do you do to keep fit and active?

Most days you can find me either in the gym or outside training for my trail runs. To be honest though I really enjoy the workouts I do at home or somewhere I can involve the family. I love seeing my son try to copy me and I know that I am creating positive habits for him.

What is your favorite fitness memory or achievement?

I just recently got into trail races and I would say that my biggest achievement in fitness was finishing and somehow winning my first one about a month ago.

What is your favorite workout?

My favorite workout would have to be my trail runs. I love going to the gym but there is something special about seeing how far you can push your body in order to make it to the top. All of those times on the way where you really just want to quit but you find a way to keep going. It shows me what I’m really made of.

In what ways do you hope to influence your children through fitness?

I hope that I am able to give my kids healthy and active habits that they can grow up with and eventually do the same with their kids.

What words of encouragement would you have for other dads out there who want to be healthy and fit?

I honestly think that the most important thing is motivating other dads to get active and live healthier lives. If more parents can live active and healthy lifestyles then more kids will as well. Fitness to me isn’t about making perfect choices, it’s about making better ones. This is especially true as a Dad.
