Adam - September 2016


It's always interesting to me the ways we get into fitness. For a lot of guys, it is the influence of their own father and the quality time spent with him that gets them hooked.

A dad's presence in his kids' lives is one of the greatest influences they'll have.

I know for me, since my dad was a bodybuilder while I was growing up, I figure it was only a matter of time before I got into lifting weights. For this month's Featured Fit Dad, Adam, it was the competitive nature of football games and the time spent watching the sport with his father that planted the seeds of fitness for a competitive kid.

Now, at 32 years old, Adam hopes to impart that same love of fitness and competitive spirit to his children. As a father to a little girl, with baby No. 2 on the way, Adam is determined to be there in every way for his kids, including making sure they are active and healthy, while remaining committed to his own health and fitness.

Here is Adam's story:

When did you first get into fitness?

Well, at an early age I started, and from what I remember and what my mother tells me, I’ve always been a very competitive lad. It was football. My father took our family to the Saskatchewan Roughriders game. That is where it all began, seeing the big players, the hits, the cheering ... I was hooked! From there I went on to playing at some very competitive levels.

What activities do you do to keep fit and active?

I try and train up to 5 days a week time depending, I still play in some recreational hockey leagues and always playing with my daughter when I have her. We do park dates, swimming, throwing the ball to the puppy, hide and seek, walks, etc.

What is your favorite fitness memory or achievement?

I would have a hard time to pick one as there are all my favourite.

What is your favorite workout?

I always love shoulder and back. HEAVY!

In what ways do you hope to influence your children through fitness?

The ways I hope to influence my children through fitness is by being active with them outside the home, giving them verbal encouragement as well as logistical support (the kids can’t drive themselves to sporting activities, after all). Growing up my mom was my biggest fan and I know I’ll do the same to my girls!

What words of encouragement would you have for other dads out there who want to be healthy and fit?

Take it one day at a time, don’t over commit yourself in case of failure, enjoy the process, and never give up. Having a healthy life + family time = BEST DAYS and a BRIGHT future with many fun-filled and fantastic memories!
