Josiah - January 2016


Social media can be a powerful thing. When I first started Fit Dad Fitness, I knew Instagram was one of the best places to gain a following to spread the message about getting dads more involved with their kids' lives through fitness and exercises and also to learn from others who are already doing it.

One of the first social media accounts I started following was Josiah's. As the owner of his own fitness company and a father himself, Josiah is a steady stream of motivation for anyone wanting to live a healthier life, whether they are a father or not. But it's clear where family and fitness rank in Josiah's life, and I'm happy to feature him as the first Fit Dad of 2016.

Here is Josiah's story:

When did you first get into fitness? 

I started bodybuilding when I was a teenager after my parents got divorced. My parents splitting up pushed me to spend a lot of time in the gym; it helped me to get away from the ‘unhealthy’ atmosphere in my home. At that time, I was an above average athlete, but I was a skinny kid with a belly. I became very self- conscious about how I looked because I played sports with top level athletes that were more muscular than me. I ended up really falling in love with the health and fitness lifestyle. After my college sports career ended, I became a personal trainer. Over the years it’s become very clear that my true passion is being healthy and fit along with looking the part of a Fitness Professional!

What activities do you do to keep fit and active?

I love to train with weights, do outside sprints, go for some relaxing walks with my wife and son, and I also enjoy playing sports!

What is your favorite fitness memory? 

Two things stick out to me. First was starting my own health and fitness company - - and getting a chance to work with thousands of people around the world. Most recently I was named one of the top 20 fitness spokesmodels for's Spokesmodel Search. That was a really experience and to be considered for that award was very humbling!

What is your favorite workout?

My favorite workout is a total body workout that includes some bodyweight movements as well as some plyometrics.

  2. Incline Dumbbell Press
  3. Deadlifts
  4. Standing Shoulder Press
  5. Box Jumps
  6. Dumbbell Curls superset with Skull-Crushers
  7. Pull-ups
  8. Finish with 20 minutes on the stepmill and abs

In what ways do you hope to influence your children through fitness?

I want to inspire my children to take care of themselves both physically and mentally. The gym has helped me build my confidence and shape me into the man I am today. I also want to make fitness fun for my kids. Working out shouldn't feel like a chore and there are so many ways to mix things up!

What words of encouragement would you have for other dads out there who want to be healthy and fit?

I know that getting in great shape while balancing family and career is very tough. The key is to make progress each week on all fronts. It's not about perfection in all areas. I believe that family is the most important thing we have. Fitness should only serve to enhance your relationship with your kids and help you in all aspects of your life. Don't think that you have to follow some crazy professional bodybuilding routine and a spartan diet to be fit.  It's actually quite the opposite. Trust me, if I can do can you!
